This is the first in-depth study of Ed van der Elsken's practice in thirty years. Drawing on new research by curator Hinde Haest, it is richly illustrated with material from a previously unpublished archive of prints, contact sheets, letters, notes, and book designs, acquired by the Rijksmuseum and Nederlands Fotomuseum in 2019. It casts new light on the working methods, subjects, and artistic development of a photographer who captured the spirit of postwar Netherlands while anticipating today's image culture, as a pioneer of street photography.
