The Netherlands has taken part in the Venice Biennale since its first edition in 1895. What began as a modest contribution to a nineteenth-century salon exhibition has grown, over more than 130 years, into an established presence on one of the world’s most influential stages for contemporary art. Commissioned by the Mondriaan Fund, art historian Nathalie Zonnenberg traces this history in 56 focused chapters, one for each Dutch participation, offering a comprehensive account of how the country has represented itself in Venice and of the artistic, cultural, and socio-political forces behind each presentation.
