A book introducing the work of Ettore Sottsass (1917–2007). Born in Austria and based in Milan, he spent more than twenty years as a design consultant for Olivetti, designing the Elea 9003 computer and the red plastic Valentine typewriter, among other things. Moving away from pure functionalism, he became a leading figure in the Radical Design movement, and in 1981 led the Memphis Group, challenging convention with neon, new finishes, and patterned plastic laminates. His work has been the subject of retrospectives at the Centre Pompidou, LACMA, and the London Design Museum.
