Born in San Francisco in 1934, Peter Saul is an outsider painter who insisted on figuration and narrative in an age dominated by abstraction. During six years in Paris, he trusted neither the promises of Abstract Expressionism nor existentialist philosophy, staying instead loyal to personal influences like French Old Master painting, MAD Magazine, Paul Cadmus, and Rosa Bonheur. At a time when painting was expected to be non-objective, he held fast to narrative and figuration. His satirical humor, love of the grotesque, and fixation on storytelling images have put him at odds with every dominant movement of the past fifty years — while also establishing him as a radical history painter with deep influence on younger artists.
