Warja Lavater, an early pioneer of the artist's book, was born in Winterthur, Switzerland in 1913. After working as an illustrator for the magazine Jeunesse from 1944 to 1958, she moved to New York and began a series of accordion-fold artist's books made between 1962 and 1971 — the same years Ed Ruscha released Twentysix Gasoline Stations, a fertile period when artists were exploring the book as a form in its own right. Telling stories through symbols like red dots in place of language, her aesthetic has been described as 'quintessentially Swiss.'
