A book of drawings by Joseph E. Yoakum (1891–1972), who began drawing in 1962 at age seventy-one after receiving what he described as a revelation in a dream. Born into poverty, he left home early to join the circus and came to know landscapes around the world through years of travel across the US and abroad. Starting in the early 1960s in a South Side Chicago apartment, he depicted scenes from all seven continents in ballpoint pen, colored pencil, pastel, and watercolor, developing a visual language entirely his own — independent of both the Black Arts Movement and the Chicago Imagists.
