The Japanese word hakage literally means ‘the shadow of a leaf,’ but the combination of its two characters (葉影) opens onto a much richer poetic territory — the outline of a leaf traced in light, the interplay of light and shadow beneath foliage, the shelter formed by a tree, the hidden spaces where insects live. Jochen Lempert took this word as the title for his book Hakage. True to his practice, Lempert builds a sequence of images in which a web of formal, thematic, and conceptual correspondences gradually comes into view. Through variations in scale, an emphasis on the materiality of the photographic medium, and a quiet, sometimes restrained humor between image and exhibition space, the work moves beyond representation toward a more intimate, sensory awareness of nature.
