The Theory Wars may look like dated history thirty years on, but the fractures they left across academia and culture at large have supplied much of the anti-intellectual footing for the rightward drift that has continued since the mid-2010s. A preference for immediacy, unfiltered reaction, and backlash against "gender ideology" over the careful mediation of theory has come to define the culture of this era, something Judith Butler warned of as early as the late 1990s, distancing herself from the Sokal camp while cautioning that sidelining "cultural" critique would only weaken the left further. The ninth issue of e-flux Index compiles writing published by e-flux in the summer of 2025, in two parts. It returns to the original scene of the Theory Wars, tracing how its tone shifted from ideological confrontation to a more pragmatic pluralism, and gathering material on the uneasy relationship between theory and practice in art, architecture, education, and politics.
