45 Symbols—Clay to Code looks at how emerging artists and designers build a systematic visual language of their own. Its inspiration is the Phaistos Disc, a 3,700-year-old undeciphered object embossed with 45 symbols. Over more than a decade, the international design seminar series The Phaistos Project has grown into a global community through open calls, workshops, exhibitions, and risograph publications, and this volume gathers more than 2,000 symbols from it. The symbols are grouped into five fields: everyday life and material culture, landscape and ecological memory, the politics of language and protest, cultural scripts and spiritual codes, and speculative alphabets. They range from personal narratives to global themes, and the book also offers hands-on methods for visual storytelling, documentation, and reflection.
