From viral dance challenges to the women of Myanmar who hung women’s clothing on washing lines to keep soldiers out during the military coup, the world we live in is saturated with performance. In Performance, scholar Diana Taylor proposes performance as a way of knowing, showing how it reaches far beyond the stage into every layer of life, culture, society and politics, from the smallest everyday gestures to global capitalism and repressive regimes. Rather than something fleeting that vanishes as soon as it occurs, performance for Taylor lives on through repetition, passing memory and culture across generations through what she calls the “repertoire.” Calling for critical repetition, using what we inherit as a tool for change rather than simply reproducing it, she opens up the possibility of imagining and enacting other bodies and gestures. Drawing on her work as a co-founder of the Hemispheric Institute and decades of engagement with performance across the Americas, especially Latin America, the book distills a lifetime of thought. For Taylor, performance is, above all, a way of “making worlds.”
