Yunseong Lee’s solo exhibition Fragmentary (the Korean part of the title, 불완전한, means “Incomplete”) presents nineteen new works from the Laocoon series and The Ten Commandments. An artist who explores contemporary visual culture through the form of comics, Lee reinterprets the Laocoön sculpture, counted among the masterpieces of Hellenistic art, as painting. The lost fragments become separate canvases, the male figures become female, and the serpents become a black ground, while speech bubbles and panel borders are painted in white with the dialogue left empty. These signs become objects within the painting, hiding or concealing the figures to create a sense of space, and The Ten Commandments, made only of the speech bubbles of the largest Laocoon triptych, becomes the one incomplete window in a gallery full of signs. The catalog of the same title recalls comics through its black-and-white single-color printing, paneled images, and foldout poster.
