Along the way, it calls on a host of twentieth-century outsiders and mentally troubled artists, philosophers, psychologists, mathematicians and scientists. Little-known scenes that are at once profound, meaningful and trivial, such as the fact that the Buddha was struck with dysentery shortly before entering nirvana, are woven throughout.
