Censorship and Literature traces how, in 1920s Japan, the censorship system clashed with, negotiated with, and sought to coexist with the publishing and literary worlds. Author Kensuke Kōno gathers sources from those who drafted the laws, the officials who enforced them, and the writers, publishers, and artists they targeted, and weaves them into a single map. It shows that censorship did more than repress: it reshaped literary form and the conditions of publishing, and the distance between censors and the censored was shorter than expected. The story of Kaizō, which Sanehiko Yamamoto founded for his election campaign and which unexpectedly drew readers with socialist discourse and became a target of censorship, also echoes the colonial Korean magazine Gaebyeok. The book points out that censorship both pressed on the modern literary field from outside and, from within, compelled it to reorganize itself.
